Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann
My review
rating: 4 of 5 stars
I kept hearing about how great this book was, and how its had such a cult following over the years. It definitely did NOT dissappoint! I could not put it down - a couple of times I almost missed my stop on the subway because I was so into it.
I have to admit, for some reason I was expecting more of a Go Ask Alice sort of acid trip drug book (not really sure why). Its not quite as in-your-face as that. Definitely ahead of it’s time, its about the modern woman and her struggles with jobs, men, weight issues, fame, fortune, and the substances used and abused in order to deal with it all. These three women face all the pressures of today’s society in the 50’s and 60’s. I’ll definitely be reading this one again. AND seeing the movie.
