Brief Encounters with Che Guevara: Stories by Ben Fountain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I absolutely loved this book. Short story collections are always perfect for reading in little bursts on the subway. The prose is magnificent - Fountain does an amazing job of contrasting first world ideals and attitudes with those of the third world. Whether in Columbia, Haiti or Myanmar, the stories portray...

My Theory
The men in this city are like all those little piles of dog poo on the sidewalk. They’re all over the place, and you know they’re trouble, but as much as you try to avoid them its inevitable that one day you’ll step in a steaming heap, the stench of which takes forever to get rid of.

Latest Goodreads: Valley of the Dolls
Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann
My review
rating: 4 of 5 stars I kept hearing about how great this book was, and how its had such a cult following over the years. It definitely did NOT dissappoint! I could not put it down - a couple of times I almost missed my stop on the subway because I was so into it. I have to admit, for some reason I was expecting more of a Go Ask Alice sort of...

And I quote:
“Okay, so let’s get into this subplot, of the real show, wherein Chuck creates Blair’s dream prom for her just “to make sure she had the perfect night.” This is the type of totally unrealistic, hokey plotline that damages young girls forever and fucks up their expectations for men in general. Like on a scale of one to ten, one being Dan’s borrowing...
Latest Goodreads: Trainspotting
Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh
My review
rating: 3 of 5 stars At first it was really hard to get through, given that it’s basically written the way Scottish people talk - accents, slang and all. And who can ever understand them? Luckily there’s a glossary in the back (which I didn’t even realize until halfway through) which helps a bit. It’s definitely a lot different...

Just listen to about the first 4 or so minutes. As un-PC and sometimes just plain crazy as Dan Savage is, I really agree with some of his rants, especially this one about abstinence only sex education. Also, his bluntness always encourages a few chuckles.
